Transformative Leadership Programme in Kenya

Step 1: Self Leadership

In late October Feminenza piloted Step 1 of its Transformative Leadership programme in Mombasa, Kenya. Our good friend Khadija Swaleh, Public Officer of the City Council of Mombasa invited 60 women leaders or aspiring leaders to participate in the programme. A marvellous range of experience and ages was represented, from fiery young women to MPs in the current government.

Step 1 is entitled ‘Self-Leadership’ and its objectives are to:

  • Declare your goals and long term purpose

  • Identify the qualities you need to meet the accompanying challenges.

For 2 days we worked together to explore the importance of self-leadership from the perspective that transformative leadership in society can only become a reality when the transformation first takes place inside each of us. That means declaring our long term purpose, and becoming committed to developing the self awareness, qualities, discipline and responsibility that will enable us to realise it. We also looked at some of the role models who have travelled these roads before us and what we can learn from them. Day 2 was enlivened by two presentations by a youth drama group led by one of the young women concerning early forced marriage and women’s rights.

We learned from each other and were both humbled and encouraged by the courage, persistence and tenacity in the women who came, from far afield, united in their desire to lead in building a more equitable, peaceful Kenya, where girls and women can take their rightful place in society for the development and good of all.

Step 2

Part 2 of this Programme will be piloted in March 2009. For more information about it, please email us at .
