Computers for Kenya (2005) project
Spearheaded by Feminenza Stichting in The Netherlands, volunteers
from across Feminenza in Europe have
succeeded
in delivering
500
computers to Kenya.
Over the last year
we have been collecting
second hand computers from an English company in many European
countries (from Denmark, Germany, Paris, Brussels,
Amsterdam, and several places in the UK) to be able
to send them over to Kenya, to schools, hospitals
and other places of need.
Our volunteers, men and women too many to mention by name, have
been busy collecting computers, cleaning them up, repairing and
reprogramming them,
selling some on Ebay to cover
our travel costs, keeping financial accounts for the whole
project and transporting computers from each of the project
teams across
Europe.
Working alongside Computers
For Development, a
charity that supplies PCs for schools, hospitals, and organisations
that
focus
on improvement
of education
and information
facilities in developing countries in Africa, Asia, and Latin America,
and thanks to a Dutch company, which imports roses from
Kenya,
we were able to make use of a free flight to deliver 500 good
quality
computers,
with Pentium III processors, direct to Nairobi.
That saved us €3500(!) and meant that more of these valuable
computers could go direct to those in need.
CFSK (Computers
for Schools in Kenya) took delivery of computers
in Nirobi and prepared them for the different projects
in Kenya. Amongst the beneficiaries of this project were organisations
with whom Feminenza has been working closely, namely, MMAAK (Movement
of Men Against AIDS in Kenya), UNILAC, the
Tasaru
Rescue Centre and
COVAW (Coalition on Violence Against
Women).
Our thanks go to all of all who have
helped in this project.
